Chronology of event (fight in Wewak) June 2022


Sunday 5th June 2022 - Youth Leader in Mengar Village Killed during Volleyball Competition.

Monday 6th June 2022 - Dawn raid conducted by Mengar villagers on Basis Number 2, killing 3 settlers despite police interventions.

Tuesday 7th June 2022- Four suspects from Basis side surrendered to Wewak Police.
Wednesday 8th June 2022 - PPC Albert Beli appealed for Mengar Leaders to surrender 5 suspects involved in the killing of the 3 Basis settlers as peace negotiations proceeds.

Thursday 9th June 2022 - Peace negotiations failed, Basis settlers attacked Mengar Village, destroyed nearly 80% of the village between 8-9 in the morning. Police and Provincial Administration again intervened to contain the situation. However Mengar Villagers recouped and retaliated at 5pm burning down Namba 2 Basis. During the last attack, another 3 fatalities were reported from the Mengar side.

ESP POLICE BOSS SAYS EXPLOSIVES WERE USED IN THE CURRENT FIGHT

The warring factions in Wewak, East Sepik Province have been reported using the world war two explosives /relics in the current fight that is ongoing.
The fight is currently going on between the villagers of Mengar and settlers at Murik Basis in the East Sepik provincial town of Wewak.
The tensions started on Sunday during a volleyball match where a youth leader from Mengar village was killed.
In retaliation, the Mengar villagers killed three Murik youths.
Meanwhile, Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Albert Beli says the situation has gone out of hand and beyond their control.
Mr Beli says the PNG Defence Force soldiers are assisting local police, and he has asked for more help.
